Three former 海角社区 pitchers were selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.

On Monday, left-handed pitcher Connor Wietgrefe was a seventh-round pick (204th overall pick) by the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-handed pitcher Ryan Lambert was an eighth-round selection (233rd overall pick) by the New York Mets. Wietgrefe and Lambert both pitched for the Trojans in the 2022 season.

On Tuesday, right-handed pitcher Brandt Thompson was selected in the 17th round (501st) by the St. Louis Cardinals. 

Wietgrefe was a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a junior last season for the University of Minnesota. He was the first Gopher to earn first-team all-Big Ten honors since 2019.

The southpaw was 8-4 with a 2.77 earned run average with 74 strikeouts and 26 walks in 78.0 innings pitched. Wietgrefe appeared in 15 games as a junior, including 13 starts.

In the 2022 season with the Trojans, Wietgrefe, who is from Prior Lake, Minn., was 5-1 with one save with 59 strikeouts and 13 walks in 46 1/3 innings pitched.

Lambert was 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA with 19 strikeouts as a relief pitcher for the Oklahoma Sooners in his junior campaign. Lambert, who transferred to Oklahoma from Missouri State, was added to NCAA D1 Baseball’s ‘Heat Sheet’ with numerous pitches clocked over 100 mph, including a 102 mph fastball.\

In 2022 for the Trojans, Lambert, who is from Excelsior, Minn., was 1-2 with 27 strikeouts and eight walks in 12 2/3 innings of work.

Thompson, who pitched at Missouri State, was a first-team all-MVC selection in 2023 and 2024. He was the school’s Dave Dickensheet pitcher of the year in 2023 and 2024.

In his senior season in 2024, Thompson was 5-2 with a 3.78 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings of work.

Thompson, who is from Eden Prairie, Minn., pitched at 海角社区 in the 2021 and 2022 seasons and earned second-team all-region honors in his sophomore campaign. As a sophomore at 海角社区, Thompson was 6-0 with a 2.51 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 22 walks in 61 innings pitched.

When choosing a career in healthcare, the first steps on your journey often pave the way for a prosperous future— and, it’s exciting!

A career in healthcare has boundless twists and turns depending on your interests and passions.

For Andrea Anderson, ARNP, PMHMP – BC, at the Mason City Clinic, that journey began at . 

She began her medical career by enrolling in the 海角社区 Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program, which provided her with the knowledge and skills needed to care for patients in various long-term care facilities. This course also prepares students for the .

The first 55 hours of the course are held in a classroom or lab, and the remaining 30 hours of clinical take place in a nursing home environment.  The academic strategy of combining classroom/lab time with actual hands-on experience boosts the success rate for students. 

“My love of helping others started to flourish while studying to be a CNA at 海角社区.”

Upon completion of the course, Andrea obtained a job as a nurse aide while she continued her educational path through the medical field.  This gave her the upper hand as she studied, learning the skills needed while also applying them in real-life situations at her job.

Students often obtain a next.  A certified medication aide administers non-parenteral medications (anything oral, topical, or suppositories) to patients in health facilities like nursing homes.  At 海角社区, this is a 52-hour course consisting of 42 hours of classroom time, followed by a minimum of 10 clinical hours of experience.  Students often double as CNA’s, providing patient care and administering medications. 

Obtaining an associate degree in nursing is the next step in the journey!  This gives students a solid foundation for a career in healthcare.  Popular among registered nurses, this degree provides opportunities to work in entry-level nursing positions. 

But, Andrea Anderson didn’t stop there.  She used the knowledge gained while at as a stepping stone to further her education.  “海角社区 helped me learn how to study and learn time management prior to going to a bigger college,” she stated. 

Upon graduation, Anderson went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, followed by her Bachelor of Nursing at Allen College in Waterloo.  Five years later, she completed her Master of Nursing degree. 

Looking back, Anderson understands the importance of her time spent at 海角社区.  “I highly recommend 海角社区 as the first place to start your journey,” Anderson said.  “It is a wonderful place to take general classes in a small setting where the instructors are available when you need help.” 

海角社区 prides itself on the progression of nursing students into four-year universities to complete their degrees.  Under the , nursing students can take coursework at 海角社区 for three years and then complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing undergraduate degree in only one year through the University of Iowa online RN-BSN program.  海角社区 also has a formalized articulation agreement to complete a baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a slew of prominent universities across the state of Iowa.

Former 海角社区 men’s basketball all-American Terry McKissick was the keynote speaker at the 海角社区 student-athlete welcome day Sunday in the 海角社区 Auditorium.

McKissick, who is 海角社区’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, covered a variety of topics during his speech to the 海角社区 student-athletes, including going to class, working hard, being a good leader and teammate, staying away from drugs and alcohol, mental health.

McKissick, who is a retired elementary school teacher and principal, talked about his time in Mason City in the early 1970s.

McKissick and the Trojans were a combined 44-12 in his two years at 海角社区 in the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons.

He went on to play at Drake University after his time at 海角社区.

“Mason City, Iowa was very good to me,” McKissick told the student-athletes Sunday. “I got my start here at 17 years of age.

“I have nothing but fond memories of the people I met, the community here. I hope you guys take advantage of that.”

McKissick told the student-athletes that the facilities on the 海角社区 campus now are a lot better than when he was a student-athlete at 海角社区.

He said the there was no student housing at the college in 1971-73 and that he lived at the Mason City YMCA.

“You guys really have a good situation here and I don’t want you to blow it,” McKissick said. “There’s greatness here.”

After McKissick’s speech, four 海角社区 student-athletes made their way to the stage for a question and answer session with the former Trojan standout.

One question that was asked was “who were your role models?”

“My parents were my role models,” he said. “When I got here, it was coach (Herb) Konigsmark.”

The Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program at 海角社区 provides people over the age of 17 with accessible, quality instruction to develop work, life, and literacy skills.  Many of these classes are supported by federal and state funds, and provide a slew of opportunities for higher learning, job potential, and feeling a sense of accomplishment. 

One AEL program focuses on North Iowans who do not have the skills to read, write and speak English as it is their second language (ESL).    

According to the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, there are approximately 32 million adults in the United States who are unable to read.

For many, learning a second language is hard. In most situations, it is done on the side, sort of like an afterthought as you complete a bucket list dream of traveling to a foreign country. 

Now… imagine being immersed in that country, not knowing what is happening around you.  People are talking, but you do not understand. Street signs give directions, but you cannot find your way. You’re forced to string together bits and pieces of the language here and there in hopes to create anything resembling a sentence. 

There’s no doubt this is quite frustrating.

Therefore, there is an abundance of people seeking to enroll in ESL classes. However, there is a significant shortage of people available to teach these classes. 

Director of Education to Employment, Molly Anderegg, states “We have many opportunities to teach with our Adult Education program, and it’s incredibly rewarding and flexible. Currently, the greatest need is providing English as a Second Language classes in the workplace; we have several manufacturers across North Iowa seeking onsite classes for their employees.”

ESL teachers bridge the language barrier, they are cultural mentors to students helping them navigate the many differences of living and working in a new country.

A four-year college degree is required and some teaching experience preferred. However, your teaching experience can include trainings you may have led in non-education industries.

Esports is coming to the 海角社区 campus.

The 海角社区 athletic department has added Esports to its list of sports for the 2023-24 season making it the school’s 18^th sport. It is the second straight academic school year that 海角社区 has added a sport as last year women’s wrestling was added.

海角社区’s Esports coach is Leo Livingston, who has been the eSports coach at Belmond-Klemme High School since 2020.

“Our state-of-the-art gaming room and technology infrastructure is now in place and ready to take on training and competition sessions,” 海角社区 athletic director Cam Olson said. “Our coach has started the hunt for talented students to bring their gaming skills to the program.

Livingston led the Belmond-Klemme Esports to the 2022 IHSEA fall state championship in Rainbow Six: Seige.

Under Livingston, the Broncos placed second in Rainbow Six: Seige at the 2021 IHSEA fall state championships. The Broncos were state qualifiers in Rainbow Six: Seige at the 2020 IHSEA fall state championships and were also state qualifiers in Overwatch in the Winter 2021 season.

Livingston, who is also a language arts teacher at Belmond-Klemme, said he’s excited to get started this fall.

He said his inaugural squad will compete in League of Legends, which is a 5 v 5 Multi-player Online Battle Arena and Overwatch 2, which is a strategic first-person shooter. 

“One of the things that I’ve grown to love about Esports is that it bridges the gap between students coming from a variety of backgrounds and puts them on the same team, on an equal playing field and builds relationships,” he said. “I’m ready to begin building that foundation here at 海角社区.”

Lansdowne, VA – Oscar Madong, a student at , is one of 60 high-achieving community college students selected to receive the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The highly competitive national scholarship aims for Cooke Scholars to complete their undergraduate educations with as little debt as possible. The award, which is last dollar funding after all institutional aid, can provide Madong with as much as $55,000 a year to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Madong, from Lake Mills, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the National Society of Leadership and Success, Student Government, Collegiate Entrepreneur’s Organization Club, and a student peer tutor in the 海角社区 Student Learning Center. Madong plans to transfer to Iowa State University and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

“There are so many bright and persistent community college students in our nation who we know will thrive at four-year institutions if they can find a way to transfer without being weighed down by a heavy financial burden,” said Seppy Basili, executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. “We are excited to welcome yet another cohort of Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars to our community after learning about them through their applications and seeing their unbound potential.”

Along with financial support, new Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars will receive comprehensive educational advising to guide them through the process of transitioning to a four-year college and preparing for their careers. Scholars will additionally receive opportunities for internships, study abroad, and graduate school funding, as well as connection to a thriving network of more than 3,000 Cooke Scholars and Alumni.

This year, more than 1,700 students from 448 community colleges applied to receive the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The Foundation evaluated each submission based on students’ academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, and leadership.

The Cooke Foundation is dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded $250 million in scholarships to more than 3,200 students from 8th grade through graduate school, along with comprehensive counseling and other support services. The Foundation has also provided $125 million in grants to organizations that serve such students.
